An African American Mom talks about her experience when her child’s hair style was undone by a school nurse, who didn’t understand black hair or black hairstyles, thus leading to the child becoming embarassed when the nurse could not recreate the hairstyle. “One day my daughter came home and she just looked…the look in her face was like she was embarrassed and hurt. I said what happened at school today? And she said oh everything was fine. But my hair mommy. My friends are teasing me and I said well…That’s not the way I did your hair this morning. Did you play a lot in recess, and she said no.They had to check for bugs and my hair…and the lady she couldn’t fix it and my hair looked so silly afterwards… All of my friends teased me and at that moment at I realized there was someone who didn’t understand my daughter’s hair…” So how do experienced technicians and nurses respectfully and safely perform head checks with diverse populations?
